Sears Literature
1955: I have heard about Hartland selling some of their toys through mail order catalogs, specifically Sears Christmas catalogs. The earliest one that I know of is 1955 when they showed a single Roy Rogers on a Champ Trigger. Along with Roy, the catalog also offered a Breyer version of Davey Crocket. Both were listed at a price of $3.69 at a time when most of the sets sold for $2.99.
You can see the additional outlining of the edges of the saddle which was only seen on the special white trimmed version—very rare. There have been a couple of this white trimmed ones show up, so I believe they did produce them with sets for a while. The saddle was molded white and the blue painted on. This special white trimmed saddle “could have been” produced only for Sears? There is no proof, but the photos used in the catalog were taken by Sears—not one of the standard Hartland catalog shots.
As you can see, This was a “NEW” product in 1955. Hartland was not listed as the manufacturer, but neither was Breyer on the Crocket set.

This photo was on the upper left corner with a Marx Zoro on the upper right. I believe this is the only Hartland in the catalog that year. Again, Hartland was not mentioned as the manufacturer. (Thanks Judith!)
