Mike Jackson’s Hartland Photos:
CLOSE-UP DETAIL SHOTS

Text & Photographs Copyright Mike Jackson 1998-2008

I dusted off the old camera with the close-up lense and snapped a few photos of some of the distinctive markings and elements found on many Hartland pieces. The sculptors at Hartland did a fantastic job on these sets. According to Gail Fitch’s research, Alvar Buckstrand and Roger Williams sculpted all Hartland figurines and parts. Roger Williams’ name did show up on a couple of the horse boxes that I own, but I have never seen either name on any of the western set boxes or brochures.

Hartland having a bad day?

Realizing these things are “just toys that sold for $2.98”, it is hard to be too critical of Hartland. Occasionally, they did seem to be a little sloppy as evident in this group of photos of Roy Rogers. It seems that most of the white fringe had some sort of red over spray and there is a fairly large blue over spray area on the back side above the belt. A collector purchased this piece as “mint” from a popular Internet auction site, only to find this set was not up to normal Hartland standards. He sent it to me to inspect and it does look like a factory paint job with the rest of the paint job in great shape. As a collector, this presents a dilemma of not having the piece you want, yet not wanting to “fix” the factory paint job. In this case, it is hard to blame the seller because it is a mint factory paint job.
