Maid of Scandinavia Catalogs

This mail order company, located in Minneapolis, MN, specialized in cake decorating supplies, tools, and accessories. Starting around 1958, they began carrying some of Hartland’s smaller figures, mostly religious, and continued through at least 1963. On occasions, they included color sheets which contained at least some Hartland pieces as shown below.

1963 Centerfold,
This large photo shows a lot of the small sets Hartland Plastics was selling in 1963 through Maid of Scandinavia—and probably numerous other mail order houses. I believe every piece shown are Hartlands. This sheet was in the Spring/Summer 1963 catalog. The Little Leaguer, offered elsewhere in this catalog, was not shown with this group.
1962
Graduation Group,
These pieces were available in black, white, blue, and grey gowns and sold for 50¢

1962, Sportsman Baseballer
Maid of Scandinavia simply called this the “Sportsman Baseballer” in their catalogs. Collectors call him the “Minor Leaguer” and he comes in a variety of ways. Notice the black based one below. 50¢

1963, Sportsman Baseballer,
Maid of Scandinavia simply called this the “Sportsman Baseballer” in their catalogs. Collectors call him the “Minor Leaguer” and he comes in a variety of ways. Noitce the white based one below. I've see a solid gold version, too. 50¢

1963, Sportsman Bowler
This piece showed up in quite a few of the earlier years. They sold for 50¢, same as the rest of the small cake toppers.

1963, Bowler
I didn’t notice this figure being available prior to 1963, but maybe I missed it. 50¢

1963, Sportsman Golfer
These seemed to be in quite a few of the Maid of Scandinavia catalogs. Someday, I will check on its earliest appearance. 50¢

1963, The Little Leaguer
I have had some contact with Hartland Sports collectors who question whether the Little Leaguer was ever sold as a cake topper. Well, here it is! It sold for 95¢ in 1963. This is the only Maid of Scandinavia catalog I have been able to find it in.

1963,
Angel Band
This group of twelve pieces was sold unpainted for $1.85

1963, Organdy Heart Ornament
This is a basic topper which sold for $2.75. Hartland cake toppers did not appear in any Maid of Scandinavia catalogs until 1963. On a quick scan, I counted over 10 versions using the heart shaped base pattern shown here.

1963, Delux Floral Spray Ornament
This topper sold for $3.00.

The base shown at the bottom of these two are confirmed Hartland pieces. There were numerous additional ornaments in the catalog which might have also been Hartlands. Many look like they fit the Hartland standards of quality.

1962, Wedding Cake Topppers Centerfold
These two photos (above and below) were part of the centerfold of the Spring Catalog. The small copy indicates you can have your choice of either black or white tux on the groom figure. Price range: $2.15 - $4.50

1962 Text: Heirloom Treasure
“We are very happy to be able to present to you this entirely new line of ornaments, which have designed with artistry and restrained good taste. You will find careful workmanship, immaculate detailing, and protective packaging; in short, an ornament which you will be proud to display on your cake creation. (Coats on grooms are available in either black or white, so please let us know which you prefer) all bases are plain white discs set on four heart-bell arrangements. Very different!”

1963, First Communion Momento Boy
This piece first appeared in the Maid of Scandinavia catalogs in 1958. From all I can tell, this one and the Girl version were the only two Hartland pieces in the entire catalog. By 1963, there were dozens of different cake toppers. This one sold for $1.20
