Mike Jackson’s Hartland Photos:
Josh Randall

Text & Photographs Copyright Mike Jackson 1998-2008

Josh Randall: #828
Randall was another of the few sets with basically no variations. His standard horse has a full mane and slender tail. The horse has a painted brown bridle but no martingale. The clips on Randall’s special gunbelt hold the Mare’s Leg gun through the ring at the top and the bottom of the barrel rests against the other clip at the lower edge of the holster. Although Steve McQueen was quite a bit thinner in the face during his years as Josh Randall, this does have a good likeness. The only known variation on this set is the possibility of having a brown Rifle Holed saddle instead of the standard brown Dale Evans style saddle.

Mold Mark
Randall figure: “©1959, Four Star-Malcom.” on the back of the left leg.

Randall’s box is one of the Crystal Palace style boxes with his name printed on the front, typical of many of the later sets. He also has his own distinctive brown and white tag. Originally, Randall was shown on the brochures in the form of a line drawing, but was replaced in the following year with the photo above.

Randall’s Hat has either 828 or 82 or 28 inside the crown. His head is much larger than most of the rest of the sets and this is a fairly elongated hat.

Josh Randall’s Saddle is identical to the later style Dale Evans saddles, both of which are molded from the same mold as used with the later style Lone Ranger sets, except these are brown plastic with silver dots. On some occasions, it appears Randall did get the rifle holed saddle. Randall’s trademark Mare’s Leg weapon hangs over the two tabs on his holster.
