Brochures::
Each set usually shipped with a brochure to help entice future sales. I numbered these #1 through #26 for convenience. You will notice that some brochures have only very minor vartiations, but in context, those differences might have important historical significance. For example, in brochure #12, they added the option to buy replacement parts from Mission Supply for the first time.
If you do have a brochure that is different in any way to the ones shown and listed here, please let me know. I’d also love to get a photocopy of it at least. I do have a few extra brochures now that I could trade for one that I am missing in my personal collection.

| *Please note: The Brochure photos are fairly large and will take a while to load. I kept the resolution fairly high and did not reduce them much at all for your reference. |

Brochure #1 (brown or blue ink), 1955 Click Here for larger images
The earliest one I have shows only a total of six pictures and none of the figures have numbers assigned to them. They are: Chief Thunderbird on Northwind, Champ Lone Ranger, Tonto, Sgt. Lance O’Rourke on a champ horse, Western Champ and his Master, Roy Rogers on a walking Trigger, Dale Evans on a chubby Buttermilk, and Davy Crockett on “Streak”. There is no date on it. It is roughly 3" x 3" when folded and unfolds to show a total of four pages and is printed on both sides. This brochure is printed with brown ink on light tan paper (unless the paper has just yellowed). In January of 2009, collector Erik Peel noticed he has a version of the same brochure in blue ink. I'd venture a guess it is the second printing of this brochure

Brochure #2, 1956 Click here to view larger images
This brochure adds Turf King, Lee, and Earp for a total of 11 sets. Turf King is shown with a full mane and the first to have leather reins. There is no date on it. It is roughly 3" x 3" when folded and unfolds to show a total of five pages. It is printed on both sides in blue ink on white paper.

Brochure #3, 1956 Variation Click here to view larger images
I don’t own this one. For all practical purposes, it is the same as the one above, except the ink color is more blue and the photos are arranged differently. Bruce Schwartz, the owner, tells me it looks original and untouched. This brochure might actually be #2 if we are trying to put these in sequence, but since it is basically a variation of the common one, I included it here as #3 until we find out more. Note: The brochure shown is compiled in Photoshop from the other brochure that I do own to represent the layout of this rare piece. |

Brochure #4, Early 1957
Click here to view larger images
This is the first brochure to show numbers. Cochise and Washington were added to this brochure, however they were shown in drawing form only. Crockett was replaced by Jim Bowie, and Turf King was eliminated altogether. |
|
| Brave Eagle was introduced on a Semi-Rearing white horse and Custer on a palomino Walking horse with a cropped mane. Allowing for the changes, this brochure shows 14 different sets. It is the first to show the Lone Ranger on a walking horse, replacing the Champ style horse in earlier brochures. 5.5" x 11" Blue ink on white paper. |
 |
|
|
Brochure #5, Later 1957 Click here to view images
This one is almost identical to the earlier 1957 brochure except the photos of Cochise and Washington replaced the drawings. Also, this brochure added Cheyenne on a walking horse for a total of 15 sets. Interestingly, Cheyenne was left off the next brochure for some reason. 5.5" x 11" Blue ink on white paper. This brochure is identical to #6 below, except it lacks the “A Hartland Creation” on the back page. There is no way of knowing at this point, but it would make logical sense that this one was first of the two. |

Brochure #6, Later 1957 Click here to view images
This one is almost identical to the earlier 1957 brochure except the photos of Cochise and Washington replaced the drawings. Also, this brochure added Cheyenne on a walking horse for a total of 15 sets. Interestingly, Cheyenne was left off the next brochure for some reason. 5.5" x 11" Blue ink on white paper. This brochure is identical to #5 above, except it shows the logo, “A Hartland Creation” on the back page. There is no way of knowing at this point, but it would make logical sense that this one was second of the two. Rick Stough noticed this variation of the #5 brochure. |

Brochure #7, Early 1958 Click Here to view larger images
This is almost the same as the two below but Cheyenne is missing. Ward Bond and Stan Musial are introduced and shown in drawing form, indicating this brochure pre-dates the next one shown. There are a total of 18 horse and riders, five gunfighters, and six baseball. By this time, The Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers had been moved to their full rearing horses. Roy still appears to have the light blue topped “V-Fringe”. 5.5" x 22" Blue ink on white paper. |

 |
Brochure #8, Mid 1958 Click here to view larger images
This one is identical to the brochure abovestill with drawings of Ward Bond and Stan Musial but it adds Cheyenne. This brochure and includes 19 horse and riders, five gunfighters, and six baseball players. More than likely, it was released immediately after seeing their mistake omission of Cheyenne in the previous brochure. Blue Ink on white. 5.5" x 22" Blue ink on white paper. |
 |
 |
 |
Brochure #9, Later 1958 Click here to view larger images
This one has 19 horse and riders, five gunfighters, and six baseball players. The gunfighters include: Earp, Hollister, Hardie, Colt, and Maverick. Most noteworthy on this brochure is the O’Rourke figure still shown on a champ horse, but labeled as Preston. Also this brochure, like the previous brochures, shows Cheyenne on a walking horse instead of the semi-rearing version. Jeffords horse shows one black leg and the other three have white stockings. Annie Oakley’s horse “Target” is shown without a breast collar. And finally, Chief Thunderbird is still on a black and white pinto. There is no date on it. 5.5" x 22" Blue ink on white paper. |

 |
Brochure #10, Last 1958 Click here to view larger images
Same as above except this one adds Bonner & Paladin Gunfighters, totaling 7 gunfighters, 6 baseball, with 19 horse and riders. Blue ink on off white paper. 5.5" x 22" Blue ink on white paper. |

Brochure #11, 1959 Click here to view larger images
The next brochure shows Longley, Randall, and McKenzie in drawing form. The back of the same brochure shows all ten gunfighters. It also shows nine of the baseball players in photos and has drawings of Ernie Banks and Nellie Fox. This brochure shows a total of 26 horse and rider sets, including the three drawings. The semi-rearing Cheyenne horse is photographed this time and the O’Rourke figure was replaced with a true Preston, complete with flag and walking horse. The plain Thunderbird set had been replaced with Warpaint Chief Thunderbird but it kept the #813. Roy Rogers and Lone Ranger moved onto full rearing versions of their horses. Rifleman was also included on this brochure. 5.5" x 24.5" Sepia ink on white paper.
This brochure is almost identical to #12 below except for one line on the back page. #11 suggests to “write us” for replacement and damaged parts, where #12 also includes information about Mission Supply. Bruce Schwartz noticed this variation of the #11 brochure.

Brochure #13, 1960 Click here to view larger images
This brochure shows all the same 26 horse and riders but in photographs this time. 12 baseball players. It also announces the coming of Gil Favor and Bret Maverick. The drawings of the baseball players have been replaced by photos and an additional figure, Duke Snyder, was added in photo. 5.5" x 24.5" overall. Sepia ink on white paper. |

Brochure #14, Early 1961 Click here to view larger images
Up until this point, Hartland had printed their brochures on fold out paper. The one above was 5.5" x 24.5". Starting with this brochure, they switched over to a standard 8.5" x 11" page, which folds over the middle and then into thirds to appear about the same size as the previous brochures. This one is mint green in color and has 28 different horse and riders, 10 gunfighters, and 12 baseball players, plus announces the new miniature series (showing 6 of them). This brochure added photos of Gil Favor and Bret Maverick from the previous brochure. It is probably the most complete Hartland brochure showing all the pieces that were available at the time. Soon after this brochure, Hartland began to cut back on their Westerns line. 8.5" x 11" Black on Mint Green paper. |

Brochure #15, Later 1961 Click here to view larger images
I have a mint green brochure of an 8 1/2" x 11" page folded into sixths. It announces the New Miniature Western Series, showing only six of them, plus 15 different baseball figures and a new line of Arabian Horses. (Actually, the minis had been selling in the 1960 Sears Christmas Catalog) The line of westerns had been cut back to 15 sets including: Roy Rogers, Jim Hardy, Bret Maverick, Earp, Rifleman, Lone Ranger, Tonto, Dillon, Warpaint Chief Thunderbird, Rebel, Cheyenne, Favor, Custer, Lee, Washington, and Paladin. Based on the last two brochures, it is clear that McKenzie, Randall, and Longley did not stay around long and that Favor and Maverick were some of the last additions. The Rebel was finally produced and appears to be the last Hartland Horse and Rider set made.8.5" x 11" Black on Mint Green paper. |

Brochure #16, Variaton of Later 1961 Variation: Also shown on this page
There were two minor variations of this brochure, too. One shows three horses and lists them as Sultan, Sama and Sultana while another one listed them as Shah, Sheik and Sheba. All else was the same 8.5" x 11" Black on Mint Green paper. |

Brochure #17, 1962 Click here to view larger images
This one shows the same15 horse and rider sets as on the previous brochure on the bottom half of one side along with some Arabians, Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds on the other half. The brochure still announces the “New” miniatures showing only six of the 12, but listing all of them. The back of the page is dedicated to showing all 18 baseball players and announces the new Pro Football Stars, showing poses of the new John Unitus and Jon Arnett. 8.5" x 11" Tan paper with brown printing. |

Brochure #18, 1963 Click here to view larger images
This brochure shows the 18 baseball figures, and two generic football players offered in 14 different colors along with decal sheet of numbers. The back side of this tan page shows the same horse families as the previous one, but this time shows Dairy Cattle and three 800 series horses which were sold seperately. They included the Appaloosa (Jeffords horse), Palamino (head down prancer), and Pinto (mane down black and whitesometimes called the ring eyed horse). Only the bottom 1.5" of the page shows any Western Riders. Of the 15 previous sets, Lone Ranger, Tonto, and the Warpaint Chief Thunderbird were eleminated from the line. Only Roy Rogers, Matt Dillon, Favor on a head down prancing coffee dunn horse, and Paladin were shown and the rest identified in text. This is the last known brochure showing the 800 series Horse and Riders. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper. |

Brochure #19, 1964 Variation Click here to view larger images
This one introduces the Little Leaguer and a few more horse sets but no westerns were shown. See notes about Brochure # 5 at the bottom. This brochure shows only 16 Baseball players but one of them is Roger Maris. Maris is supposed to be the last baseball player produced and it appears that Apparicio and Groat were dropped to make room for the Little Leager and Maris. More than likely, this brochure was included with most of the Sports sets. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper. |

Brochure #20, 1964 Variation Click here to view larger images
The back page of this brochure is exactly like the back page of #17 above. The front page lacks any sort of sports figures at all, nor does it show or mention the mini horse and riders. It announces the upcoming 600 series of horse and riders, along witht the woodgrained sets and farm set which appear in the brochure below. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper. |

Brochure #21, Later 1964 Click Here to View Larger Images
This brochure has “A Division of Amerline” under the words Hartland Plastics similar to the previous brochure. A brochure below, however, does not have that line. Interesting. It does not have the woodgrained Saddlebred which shows up in the next one. The minis are identified only as “Cowboys, Indians, & Gambler”. The mid-sized cowboys are not shown here. This is the first brochure to show the new Sunny Acre Farm Sets, numbered with the #700 series. There is a very good chance that Hartland had too many different sets and products to fit on one page and they just made a variety of different brochures which went out randomly. Hard to say at this point. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper. |

Brochure #22, Late 1964 or Early 1965 Click here to view larger images
Hartland advertised in Sears Christmas catalogs over the years. Pieces showing up for the first time were also being advertised in the 1964 Christmas book so I am pretty sure I can date this one. It is tan with black and white photos on 8.5" x 11" paper and folded to the normal brochure size. At the very top of the page are the three mid sized horse and riders: Alakli Ike, Cactus Pete, & Commanche Kideach selling for $1.98. Also, you could buy the Silver Canyon Round-up set which included Cactus Pete and three additional Quarterhorses. The rest of the page shows only horses and horse sets, including several horses that had not shown up on previous brochures. On the back side of the brochure, it shows several horse sets, the Tinymites, and several horse assortment sets. This brochure also shows the store display of Sunny Acre Farm sets and a few weanling foals. The only westerns on this page were a group of six Mini Hartlands which sold individually for 98¢.
Each of the past few brochures had been phasing out the larger 800 series sets and making room for horses and horse sets. While there is no date on the brochure, there is a small “#5” in the lower right hand corner. I’ve looked carefully at the other brochures for a similar number and have not found one. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper.

Brochure #24, Early 1966 Click here to view larger images
The three remaining horse and riders assortment #6102 sets were eleminated (originally Ike, Pete and Kid). The boxed assortment group the #1003 labeled as Silver Canyon Roundup in the previous photocopied brochure were being sold for 10¢ to 49¢ and had been changed to #1005 and sold from 10¢ to 59¢ in this brochure. The mini sets were also eliminated on this brochure. This is the first time I have seen the “Superb Series” or the “Regal Series”, both in the new 11" sizes. The Superb Series were numbered as 9937, 9936, 9924, 9926, 9915, and 9916 on this brochure however their numbers were changed to 90021, 90031 and 90041 in the next brochure where they lost the Superb name. There they were grouped with the Regal Series. This brochure has a subtle difference from #23 below. Near the bottom of the front page, under the Hartland logo, it says “Division of Amerline”, while #23 lacks this notation. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper.

Brochure #25, 1966 Click here to view larger images
This one is identical to the one above but is missing "Divison of Amerline". It is a tiny detail, but documents a company in transition. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper. |

Brochure #26, 1967 Click here to view larger images
The Little Red Barn is introduced here along with shrink wrapped cards with various horses. The #8001 horse assortment from the last brochure had changed from $1.98 to $2.39 on this one. No minis or riders of any sort. The horses used with the midsized sets of old were now being sold as individual horses for $1.00 each. Also see notes about Regal and Superb series in the brochure descriptions above. 8.5" x 11" Sepia ink on tan paper. |
